DWM (Do With Mom) Mother’s Day Ideas!

Mother’s Day is a day to show mom just how much she means to you, so why not take her to do something super fun WITH you?As a mom I must say that breakfast in bed is my favorite way to start that day, but what to do after?  Well here are a few ideas of what you (Dad) can plan as a super fun day for the whole family to show mom a good time.

1. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Not made or cleaned up by mom)

Every year my boys surprise me with breakfast in bed, which is a nice way to wake up.  But since I cook and clean up 3 meals a day, everyday, a super special treat on Mother’s Day is to NOT have to do any meals at all.  So Dad & Kids – today it’s your job to make or take mom out to lunch and dinner as well; AND don’t forget to clean up. :-)  (take mom for a picnic in the park, or to her favorite restaurant)

2.  Paint Pottery

I like to go to Half Baked Pottery in Indianapolis, but I’m sure there is a similar place wherever you live too.  Just Google paint-your-own pottery studio and see what comes up.  Common other names of these places are Pottery By You, U Paint Pottery, Ceramic Dreams.  How it works: You go into the studio and pick your piece (Mugs, Plates, Bowls, Banks, etc.) then  you pick your paint colors and designs, sit down and paint away.  When you are done, you give it to the staff and they will fire it for you.  You can pick it up one week after painting.  It’s a fun way to make gifts for mom, and for her to make something she wants as well.  I LOVE going here and recently made myself this mug.

3. Buy and Make a Potted Flower Box

We all love to get mom flowers for Mother’s Day, but how about flowers that will live all summer instead?  She can enjoy them longer, pick them herself, and have fun with the family.  Set out to go shopping at your favorite nursery (after you make her breakfast) and buy some pretty flowers and dirt (and a pot if you don’t already have one).  Then head home and work together to design how you want them in the pot, plant them and pick where they will go at your house.  You could even paint/decorate your own planters to take this activity a step farther.  Then she’ll get to enjoy her flowers, and think of the fun family day every time she looks at them, all summer long.  It’s spring, so it’s the perfect time to get planting! You can even do a veggie or herb garden too; useful and pretty!  Here are some flower pot design ideas: http://www.pinterest.com/lbehenna/flower-pot-designs/

4.  Wine & Canvas (or Cookies & Canvas)

Not all, but many of the Wine & Canvas facilities are having a Brunch & Canvas for Mother’s Day.   If you aren’t familiar with Wine & Canvas events; you go to a location (drink some wine), snack on some food, and paint your own painting as taught by an instructor.  You do NOT have to be an artist, anyone can do it.  It’s a lot of fun and the whole family can go.  The do offer Cookies and Canvas for the littler ones too.  It takes a couple of hours and a ton of fun.  Plus you get to take home a cool painting that you did all by yourself.  Check out a Wine & Canvas near you to see what Mother’s Day options they have.

5. Mom & Kids Photo Shoot

I know usually I’m not in the photos we take day to day since I am the photographer, so why not make a photo shoot where Dad (or a family member with a good camera) is the photographer.  Take mom to her favorite park and get photos of her with the kids.  It’s all about mom, so capture those great moments that she rarely gets captured in.  With digital cameras today, you don’t have to be a professional to get some nice pictures, so there is no need to hire a pro and make it a huge event, just keep it low key, dress everyone nice, and have fun.  You’ll probably get some great action photos and capture what’s most important to mom, happy kids!  Tip: Make sure mom knows and has a chance to do her hair and makeup :-).

6. Send Mom to the Spa (and clean the house for her)

What’s better than a day at the spa? A day at the spa and coming home to a clean house and hot dinner!  Give mom the day off this year.  Set her up with a yummy breakfast and send her (by herself or with some other deserving mom) to the spa for a pedi, mani, facial, and/or massage.  While she’s there getting pampered and having a much needed day off, CLEAN THE HOUSE!  You may just see tears of joy when she walks in the door from her relaxing day to find a clean house, hot meal and happy family waiting for her.  She will remember that Mother’s Day forever!

  1. I love this idea of doing activities with or for mom as a gift instead of something store-bought!
